Three suspected shoplifters were caught Sunday afternoon when they squared off with a customer outside UGO – only to discover the customer had a gun.When police arrived, the three teens were being held at bay by the customer, and the items they had reportedly stolen were on the ground. One of the group, Jess Pease, 19, was arrested for shoplifting while his friends, Scott Rayburn, 18, and a 17-year-old juvenile were released after Pease took the blame.United Grocery Outlet shopper James Maxwell, 47, who holds a legal handgun carry permit, was commended for his bravery in pursuing the alleged shoplifters when they bolted from the store.According to police reports, the chain of events which led to the showdown began to unfold when the three walked into UGO, located on The Strip, late Sunday afternoon.“The store was on high alert since there had been a high volume of shoplifting going on,” said McMinnville Police Chief Bryan Denton. “When store employees saw one of them carrying a backpack, that immediately made them suspicious.”After watching the youths as they walked around the store, a cashier asked Pease to open his backpack as he was walking toward the door.
