McMinnville officials agreed to pay $81,856 to the Warren County School System during Tuesday night’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting. The measure passed unanimously and without discussion by Mayor Jimmy Haley, Vice Mayor Ben Newman and Aldermen Jimmy Bonner, Ken Smith, Billy Wood, Mike Neal and Rick Barnes. With the vote being a resolution and only needing one pass before the board, a check was written and submitted to the Trustee’s office Wednesday. That money will be turned over to the Board of Education.Agreeing to the settlement ended a potential lawsuit between the city and county over one-half of the sales tax revenue collected by the city for liquor by the drink which should have been turned over to the Board of Education. Members of the Warren County Commission had previously voted to authorize the county attorney to file suit against the city of McMinnville to recover the funds in the event the city of McMinnville has not paid the amount owed by May 29.The liquor-by-the-drink referendum passed in March 2003 and the city has collected $163,712 in liquor-related sales tax since then.
