Rape charges have been leveled against a man who allegedly forced himself on a teen-age girl while working in a nursery.
The suspect, Jerry Mitchell Butcher, 49, is charged with felony rape, a crime that carries eight to 12 years in prison. He has reportedly confessed to the crime during questioning by investigators. He will face preliminary hearing before General Sessions Judge Bill Locke later this month.
His charges come after sheriff’s investigators began an investigation into the alleged sex crime which happened as Butcher and the teen were working at a local nursery. According to sheriff’s reports, Butcher followed the girl inside a building at the nursery and forced himself on her.
The crime, which happened almost a year ago, remained unreported because the girl was afraid to come forward.
“He warned her not to tell anyone,” said sheriff’s investigator Kevin Murphy, explaining the delay in the case. “He admitted to it when he was questioned.”
The child in the case, while being under the age of 18, is over the age of 13. Had she been under the age of 13, Butcher could be facing 15 to 25 years at 100 percent under the child rape statute.
