Students at F.C. Boyd Christian School will be able to enhance their education with advanced technology made possible by the generosity and forethought of Steve and Kate Smith.  The school is a recipient of a grant from the Steve and Kate Smith Community Trust, making the construction of a new computer lab at the school a reality.
Boyd Christian School principal Tabetha Sullens said, “I am overwhelmed with admiration of the Smith family, their generosity, financial planning for the future of youth in Warren County and for their legacy that will live on. We will use the money to construct the Smith Technology Lab. The ‘Steve’ side of the lab will have desktop computers and the ‘Kate’ side will have laptops. The capacity of the large lab having two split sides will enable us to teach two classes at once. Their foresight will enable our students to be prepared with 21st Century skills. Every student using technology on a daily basis will be better prepared for college and/ or the workforce in Warren County. We are very thankful.”
The Smiths lived a quiet, unassuming life for many years after their retirements. Steve had been an owner in his family’s machine manufacturing business, Powermatic Machine Company. Kate had been a teacher in McMinnville.
Since the couple did not have children, they decided to establish a trust to help children in their community. First National Bank, as Trustee, oversees the Smith’s trust.
The mission for the trust is recorded in Steve’s last will and testament. The mission states that he wished “to enhance the quality of life of the children in Warren County, Tennessee.” Steve believed this goal could be accomplished by supporting charitable organizations that “address the physical, mental, educational, artistic and spiritual needs of the children in our county.”
The Trustee makes grants to nonprofit organizations located in Warren County.
