Blood Assurance sees record number of donors

Blood Assurance, the local blood supplier for River Park Hospital, has reported a record number of volunteer blood donations for the area in 2012.
The increase will be significant once the year is concluded given the fact that in 2011, 550 units of blood were collected for the year. To date this year, 670 units have been donated.
At the annual board of director’s meeting, the area was recognized as the most improved area Blood Assurance serves.
Jay Baumgardner, vice president of community relations for Blood Assurance, attributes the rise in donations to the efforts put forth from the McMinnville Advisory Board of Blood Assurance.
“The advisory board has really come a long way since we began collecting blood in this area. We appreciate what they do to help save lives in their community,” Baumgardner said.
In addition to helping Blood Assurance donor recruiter Jaclyn Booker, the advisory board recently took a trip to the Blood Assurance main location in Chattanooga. There they toured the laboratory and distribution center to better understand what happens to the blood and blood products donated to Blood Assurance before they come back to save patients at River Park and other area health care facilities. From July 1 to Sept. 30, patients in Warren County have needed 264 units of blood.
Those wanting to hold a blood drive should contact Booker at 931-239-9411.
McMinnville Walgreens will hold a community blood drive Dec. 20 from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Blood Assurance is the sole provider of blood used at River Park Hospital and other regional hospitals. It’s a nonprofit regional blood center in operation since 1972.
Over 400 blood donors are needed every day to adequately supply area hospitals with the blood and blood products patients need in order to survive.
