MOUNT CARMEL, Tenn. (AP) — Police in the Washington County city of Mount Carmel say a man has found the body of a newborn in the trash.

District Attorney Berkeley Bell said Tuesday the body was found Monday afternoon by a man who called police.

The Kingsport Times-News quoted Bell, who said the remains were those of a full term infant. Bell said charges are pending in the case.

The newspaper reported the man was asked by his wife to put a box in the trash. The man became curious and opened the box to find the newborn's body. On Tuesday afternoon, police had not determined whether the wife had given birth. An autopsy was being conducted.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the investigation.
