Staffing, sponsor, and coaching shortages may have caused a slight delay, but McMinnville Youth Basketball has rebounded and is ready for a full-court press.
Drafts began last week and the opening tip is slated for Dec. 11.
Right at 300 area youth will enjoy the new courts and amenities in the inaugural season at Milner Recreation Center. Approximately 39 teams, 40-50 coaches, and 25 staffing support persons will bring a robust energy to the Rec Center this fall, each Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. For the first time in league history, all games will be played under one roof.
Terry Beard, athletic coordinator for McMinnville’s Parks and Recreation Department, spoke on the league saying, “I think every child in Warren County, regardless of their abilities, should play team sports. I would like to thank the staff, volunteers and coaches. Without them, these children would not have the opportunity to play. It’s great to get to watch them improve, develop friendships and a sense of sportsmanship. It means so much. One of our coaches said it best in saying, ‘We don’t know what these children go through at home. For some it may be the best few hours of their week.’”
The new facility has eight goals available for practices. Beard added, “Hopefully, all the teams can get in here and get their practices in. We are excited about this season.”
