Warren County was faced with a LaVergne team that played like a swarm of yellow jackets Friday night at The Dalt.
The Wolverines displayed harassing man-to-man defense to beat the Pioneers, 65-43.
LaVergne (5-2) has the makings of a team that can make serious noise come tournament time with size in the middle, perimeter shooting, and elite quickness.
The Wolverines pulled away in the third quarter when the team began pressuring Warren County in the backcourt. LaVergne’s speed was paralyzing and the Pioneers couldn’t find an answer to overcome the athleticism of the Wolverines.
Pioneer Kaden Rutledge did his part early as he played like a bolt of lightning. His aggressiveness was a big reason Warren County was up at the half, 20-19. Rutledge finished with a game-high 13.
On one play late in the first quarter, Rutledge stepped in front of a pass to the post for a steal. He dribbled through the entire Wolverine defense on his way for a coast-to-coast layup.
After a physical first half, it appeared the game could go down to the buzzer. But LaVergne had other ideas with a diamond backcourt press the Pioneers couldn’t shake.
The Wolverines exploded for 20 points in what appeared to be the blink of an eye, turning a one-point halftime deficit into a 39-25 lead late in the third in a flurry of offense.
LaVergne had too many weapons for the Pioneers to stop, including towering big man Daunte White, who led the team in scoring.
