If the outcomes in elementary boys basketball were starting to feel like foregone conclusions, Monday's action proved anything can happen on any given night. Centertown needed a last-minute 3-pointer to keep its unbeaten streak alive, while Bryson Carrol's OT heroics were able to lift Dibrell to a huge win over Eastside.
Easton Cotten proved to be the hero for the Warriors Monday at Morrison, hitting a key 3-pointer in the waning seconds to push his team over the top in a 42-41 battle. Centertown, now a perfect 8-0, had to rally from a double-digit deficit in the second half to continue its winning ways against a dangerous Eagle team that was back at full strength Monday.
"It was a crazy game," said Centertown coach Josh Thaxton. "We played from behind pretty much the entire game. Easton came off the bench and played well. He hit a huge 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to put us up."
Morrison (7-2) had lost the previous meeting at Centertown 39-7, but played without leading scorer Cooper Murphy in the season opener for both teams. With the Murphy twins - Cooper and Weston - both in the lineup in the rematch, the Eagles were ready to play the role of spoilers in the Warriors' quest for a perfect season.
Cooper had 10 points and Dallas Cagle hit a key 3-pointer in the first half when Morrison built a 23-16 lead by halftime. The break gave Centertown just enough time to make a plan to slow down Cooper, but Weston started heating up in the second half, swishing two big triples in the fourth quarter to keep Morrison in the lead.
Ultimately, it was Cotten that came to the rescue when Centertown needed it the most. He scored nine points in the game and all of them came in the fourth quarter. He started heating up with a three-point play, added a 3-pointer moments later and saved his best for last, drilling the game-winning 3-pointer as Morrison was unable to get loose for an open shot before the final buzzer.
Lawson Denning led Centertown with 16 points, followed by Rawley Gilispie with 12. Gilispie was also huge in the fourth-quarter comeback, scoring five late points for the Warriors.
Colton Anderson rounded out the Warrior scoring with five points.
Cooper Murphy led Morrison with 16 points, followed by Weston Murphy with 14 points. Cagle added six points, Kolten Pennywell and Dalton Lowe scored two points apiece and River Alford finished with one.
While things were going down to the final seconds in Centertown, across town Dibrell needed extra time to top Eastside 32-31 in a big battle for fourth place in the elementary standings.
Carrol's shooting proved to be the difference for Dibrell as he scored 18 points and hit four 3-pointers, none bigger than his connection from long distance in OT. Carrol's long shot was the lone bucket for the Wildcats in extra time, but it was enough to make a great team effort stand up.
"The kids were really coachable and did what we asked them to do," said Dibrell coach Bryson Elrod about his team's late-game execution. "We had really good teamwork and that led us to winning."
Also scoring big buckets for Dibrell were Lane Cantrell (seven points), Jr Welden (four points), Tripp Martin (two points) and Jared Hernandez (one point).
Big post Hayden Mullican led Eastside with 11 points while battling foul trouble most of the night. Kelton Holt finished with 10 points, followed by Maks Young with four and Isaac Pitts, Samuel Sullivan and Dannie Valenta with two points each.
