The WCMS Lady Pioneers picked the perfect time to start peaking. Warren County will be playing in the TMSAA sectionals next month after winning 2-of-3 games in the Area 6 tournament last week.
The Lady Pioneers beat Lewisburg 45-16 in the opener, then topped Whitthorne 54-30 in the consolation game to punch their ticket to the next round. It was nearly a perfect week, but WCMS fell to rival Coffee County 59-27 in the winner’s bracket finals before bouncing back to top the Tigers Friday.
Excelling on the outside led the team to get off to a great start in postseason play. Warren County sank 10 triples against Lewisburg, led by trio from Harper Patrick as she finished with a team-high 11 points. Izzy Geesling sank two, while Maelee Turner, Adasah Haswell, Kinsley Simpson, Anna Templeton and LB Guthrie all hit one from deep in the blowout.
Turner took over the offensive load in the win over Whitthorne, posting nine of her team-high 12 points in the first quarter as Warren County raced out to a 20-8 advantage.
A tenacious defense which held Whitthorne scoreless in the second mixed with two deep triples from Simpson and Guthrie as the margin grew to 33-8 by halftime. Warren County spread out the scoring in the second half, getting nearly the entire roster chipping in as it rolled to victory.
Simpson and Geesling finished with eight points each in the consolation game, followed by Haswell with seven, Patrick with six, Templeton with five, Guthrie with three, Christy Farmer with two and Maddie Bryant with one.
Warren County will play in the TMSAA sectionals starting Monday, Feb. 3.
