WCMS girls fall to Franklin South

The WCMS Lady Pioneers attempted to fight off an aggressive attack by a group of Lady Trojans who were out for a win. The Lady Trojan pressure defense forced the Lady Pioneer offense into bad decisions and turnovers early.
The early pressure by Franklin South paid off in the end with a 36-22 win over WCMS.
Lady Trojan Ashlin Holman led all scorers with a game-high 19 points and the Lady Pioneers searched for a way to stop Holman the entire four quarters.
Holman led the attack on the Lady Pioneer defense and she wasted little time in getting to the rim. Her pursuit of the basketball netted her six points in the first period. Holman also went to the free-throw line and shot 2-for-2. Chole Nard assisted Holman in the early lead.
As the Lady Trojans pulled away, Lady Pioneer Beth Vaughn got free from the Franklin South defense and hit her mark over the defense. The other offense came when Savannah Cox knocked down a pair of free throws after the contact brought out the whistle and at the end of one WCMS trailed 11-4.
It was more Franklin South offense in the second quarter and it looked like a mirror image of the first period. Holman again led the attack with less shots from the floor and more trips to the free-throw line. Haley Cash and Angela Tarrant combined for three points before the half.
The pressure defense applied by the Lady Trojans had the Lady Pioneers at a standstill. Nautica Brown got inside and scored her only basket of the game. Kinsley Lorance and Kamryn Knowlin connected from the free-throw line.
WCMS was on the ropes after a physical first half and the Lady Trojans showed no signs of letting up. At the half, WCMS trailed 23-8.
The Lady Pioneers improved in the second half and Alora Stuart responded inside and gave the Lady Trojan defense a taste of its own medicine. She dropped in her first six points of the game. Hale Pennington slipped past the defense into the open floor and scored her first two points of the game.
WCMS focused more on Holman in the second half and she fed the ball to other players on her team. Tarrant was left alone behind the three-point line and she did not hesitate to pull the trigger on her only 3-point shot of the game. Cash was perfect from the free-throw line in the third and at the end of the quarter WCMS trailed 30-16.
In the final period Knowlin got in close and dropped in her final four points of the game and Pennington earned a trip to the free-throw line after a hard foul. Franklin South set the tone early and carried it through till the end.
The Lady Trojans added six more in the final quarter and they took control early in the game and defeated the Lady Pioneers by a final score of 36-22.
The Lady Pioneers played DeKalb Middle on Thursday with results not available at press time.
