The Warren County Middle School baseball team improved its record to 2-0 as the Pioneers hosted the Harris Middle School Eagles on Friday night at Pioneer Park. The Pioneers won 7-4 in a game that didn’t see much hitting from either team.
Pioneer first baseman Will Rivers led the team, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Braden Bottoms picked up the win, making his record 1-0 on the season. Bottoms struck out nine Eagles and allowed three runs in five innings.
The visiting Eagles started the top of the first inning with a double up the middle from Slayden Simmons, who scored on a single from Mason Landers, making the Harris Middle lead 1-0 going into the bottom of the first.
In the bottom of the first, Pioneer center fielder Omari Harris led off with a single to left field and scored from third base on a fielder’s choice to make it 1-1.
Neither team would score again until the bottom of the third when Pioneer shortstop Wyatt Wilson scored on an error by the Eagles, 2-1.
Harris tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fourth with a RBI single from Caleb Marsh. WCMS scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning, thanks to RBIs by Kason Holder and Rivers, to take a 5-2 lead at the end of four innings.
The Eagles added a run in the top of the fifth, and the Pioneers answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning due to a walk by Harris Middle pitcher Logan Roberts, and an error made by the Eagle infield, to give the Pioneers a four-run lead at the end of the fifth inning, 7-3.
The Eagles added one more run in the top of the seventh, but that wouldn’t be enough as the Pioneers prevailed with a 7-4 victory. Harris Middle fell to 0-2 on the season.
The Pioneers were led by Rivers, as well as Holder and Harris, who both contributed the only other two hits for the Pioneers. The Eagles’ only bright spot in the game was Simmons, who went 2-for-4 in defeat.
The Pioneers will be back in action Monday at home against the Coffee County Red Raiders. They will look to improve their hot start and keep their undefeated streak alive. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
