The Warren County High School girls golf team had its winning streak snapped at the Murfreesboro Invitiational Tuesday, while the Pioneers showed marked improvement in a loaded field.
The Lady Pioneers, who had won two matches in District 6-AAA play and the Tullahoma Invitational, finished third in an 11-team field Tuesday at Champions Run golf course. The Pioneers finished tied for seventh out of 14 teams.
Sophomore Brittany Myers did bring some hardware back to Warren County, though it was not the team trophy the team coveted when action began at 8 a.m. in Murfreesboro Tuesday.
Myers shot 76 on the 18-hole, par-72 course. It was the third-best round in a competition that featured over 30 girl golfers.
Freshman Saylem Powell added an 82 as Warren County finished with a team score of 158. Senior Katelyn Davenport’s round of 88 was not included in the Lady Pioneer’s team score.
Warren County was 10 shots off the lead as Riverdale won with 148. Cookeville finished second.
Coach J.W. Holt was still proud of his Lady Pioneers, who hold a 2-0 record in District 6-AAA play.
“Finishing third in this talented field was nice. The girls played well,” said Holt.
The Pioneers came close to meeting the challenge coach Holt put forth to start the season at the Murfreesboro Invitational.
Coach Holt wants his team to strive for each player to finish under 80 and Warren County got halfway there Tuesday.
Junior Clayton Myers led Warren County with a round of 76, while sophomore Nicholas Powell was two strokes behind at 78. Senior Tucker Lynn and sophomore Nick Stern just missed shooting in the 70s as the duo both came in at 80. Brock Watson’s 86 did not factor in to Warren County’s team score of 315.
Coach Holt saw improvement from his Pioneers at Champions Run golf course.
“The boys took a step in the right direction,” said Holt. “We were two strokes away from four guys in the 70s, which is our goal as a team. When that happens, we’ll be tough to beat.”
Siegel won the competition with a team score of 296. Cascade finished second at 307 and Riverdale was third with 308.
Warren County was scheduled to travel to White County yesterday for a match, but weather forced the event to be postponed. A make-up date is yet to be determined.
The Pioneers and Lady Pioneers will play again Monday in the Cookeville Early Bird tournament.
Action at Cookeville golf course will begin at 8 a.m.
