Both Centertown squads showed they could claim championships last week in the preseason tournament. On Monday, the Lady Warriors and Warriors showed they don't mind playing with targets on their backs either.
Centertown swept Boyd with ease, kicking off the 7-8 grade regular season in style at home. The Lady Warriors won 28-8 and the Warriors topped the Broncos 39-22.
The Lady Warriors, who have now won 17 straight games in elementary play, dominated defensively, allowing Boyd to score just two points in each quarter Monday. On the other side, Rylee Young matched the Lady Broncos on her own, hitting two early 3-pointers on her way to an eight-point night.
Reese Reinitz also hit a 3-pointer on her way to a six-point night, while Karsyn Mathis and Kate Williams worked in the paint for four points each.
Centertown led 22-4 by the break and got late baskets from Ansley Pepper and Willa Denning to finish off the blowout.
For the Lady Broncos, Charleigh Gannon led the way with four points while Channing Gannon and Kariana Ferrell added two points each.
It look the Warriors a little longer to pull away from the Broncos in the nightcap, but Centertown would ultimately find a way to complete an opening-night sweep.
Centertown led 18-11 at halftime of the boys game, then exploded for 16 points in the third quarter to put the game away.
Nolan McCormick and Wesley Romzek led the Warriors with nine points apiece, followed by six points each from Aiden Carter and Waylon Duggin. Rounding out the scoring for Centertown was Jackson Kirby with five and Dalton Stalcup with four.
Justin Spry led the Broncos with 10 points. Clayton Keele, Bennett Perry and Hunter Johnson chipped in four points each.
Centertown is set to play its final game before Christmas break Thursday at Dibrell. It's set to be a day game against the Wildcats and will begin at 11 a.m.
