It took four complete quarters to determine a winner Tuesday night between the Eastside Bulldogs and the Centertown Warriors. After a back-and-forth battle, at the final buzzer the Warriors were on top 30-29.
Eastside was down at the half by a score of 18-8 and it looked as if the game might be over. Eastside adjusted its game plan and made a monumental defensive effort in the third quarter and held Centertown to just two points by Isaiah Pollard.
The Bulldogs could have just rolled over and played dead. Instead Caden Beaty and Christian Rogers combined for eight points in the third. Speedy Bulldog guard Treyton Terry picked up the slack and added three points to the Bulldog total.
After a ferocious third-quarter defense Eastside trailed 20-19 and was one basket from claiming the lead with six minutes to play.
The Bulldogs were winded and the Warriors were able to stay one step ahead throughout the quarter. The two teams traded baskets down the stretch. Blake Adams and Nathan Lemons each picked up a pair of shots and Trent Davenport shot 2-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Centertown edged the Bulldogs as time expired and defeated Eastside at home by a final score of 30-29.
Nathan Lemons for Centertown led all scorers with a game-high 11 points.
The first quarter belonged to Centertown and the Bulldog defense could not stop Davenport, who dropped six of his nine-point total in the first period. Eastside only posted two points in the opening period and struggled early to find a rhythm and trailed 11-2 after the first.
The Bulldogs settled down and a few shots fell in the second. Terry was 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. Evan Watts scored his only two points just before the half.
Centertown extended its lead to 18-8 just before the half. Quick hands and feet provided Centertown with opportunities under the basket. Aiden Miller picked up his only two points before the half.
It was a heavyweight slugfest to the finish in the second half and Centertown held its ground and walked away with a 30-29 win at Eastside.
