There was no doubt if Centertown was going to complete a perfect season, it's toughest test would be trying to take down Morrison for a third time in the D2 championship game. It was even made tougher that the Eagles - through the rotation of tourneys each year - had homecourt advantage for the showdown.
Nothing was going to stop the Warriors though. Using a final 5-0 scoring stretch in the final two minutes, Centertown was able to take down the Eagles 39-34 to win the D2 championship for the first time in three years.
"We played really good defense and limited them to one shot late in the game," said Centertown coach Josh Thaxton about the late run. "Lawson Denning really stepped up in the fourth quarter to give us some breathing room and our guards did a good job taking care of the ball to run clock."
Denning had eight of his 10 points in the fourth quarter when Centertown rallied from a 28-25 deficit to topple the Eagles. Colton Anderson was also invaluable in the finals, sparking the Warriors with 15 big points.
Rounding out the Centertown scoring was Rawley Gilispie with six, Eason Cotten with five and Tayshawn Cummings with three.
Two big triples from Dallas Cagle helped the Eagles rally from a 20-17 deficit halftime to take the lead in the second half, but Morrison couldn't hold on late.
Cooper Murphy led the Eagles with 14 points, followed by his twin brother Weston Murphy with 12. Cagle ended with six and Kolton Pennywell wrapped up the scoring with two points for the Eagles.
