Kenzie Walker has always had a passion for cheerleading. Now she'll get to pass down that same passion to WCHS athletes.
Walker, 22, was named the new football cheer coach Wednesday, bumping up to the top spot after serving as a helper with the program last year. Walker will be back on the Nunley Stadium sidelines again this fall, a familiar spot she held not too long ago when she was one of the top cheerleaders for WCHS from 2016-19.
"I'm so excited to get the season going," said Walker. "Never in a million years did I think I would be coaching football cheer, but (last season) the other coach had to step down and Chris (Hobbs) reached out to me.
"He said he had heard great things and was curious if I would be interesting in helping. I knew I couldn't say no to that."
Walker has over a decade of experience in cheerleading, dating back to when she was winning national championships as a young girl with Warren Energy locally.
She was able to accomplish a big career goal in 2021 when she joined the Tennessee Tech cheer team and was a UCA All-American and instructor at UCA camps as well.
"My goal for this season is to really change the culture and drive it back to how it was where I cheered at WCHS," said Walker when asked about her early goals on the job.
She won't be wasting time getting right to work. She's hopeful to start building a roster for the 2024-25 competitive cheer team soon and will get a chance to bring her group together for performances beginning this summer.
Walker can't wait. She's ready to start spreading school spirit again at Warren County High School.
