Pioneers can't find footing after rain delay

Pioneer linebackers Deandre Thomas, left, and Caleb King combine to deliver a sharp hit to a Tullahoma RB during Friday nights scrimmage at Nunley Stadium.

Tullahoma scored first then held back a determined Warren County charge to claim a 14-6 victory in a scrimmage Friday night at Nunley Stadium.
The start time was postposed 90 minutes due to storms. When play began, Pioneer QB Isaiah Grayson made plays that seemed as improbable as a band from Nashville playing “Dark Side of the Moon” in downtown McMinnville later this month.
Grayson said afterwards he is trying to work on staying in the pocket more. However, with a young offensive line that has no varsity experience, Grayson is going to have to scramble to avoid sacks.
Warren County got a glimpse of another silver lining on offense, sophomore RB Jay Rozier. Fans of Pioneer football can expect to see some excitement from the Grayson-Rozier combination.
Rozier showed some exceptional open-field running after catching a screen pass from Grayson and rambled 65 yards. Later on that drive, Rozier ran the ball in for Warren County’s only touchdown of the scrimmage.
“We have a ton of young players who are getting playing time with the varsity,” said Pioneer coach Tom Moore. “Some are freshmen including Clay Thompson and Donate Elam. We did some things well tonight. We ran the ball well.  We got after them on defense, but we were out of position sometimes. Tullahoma does some different things and we will learn from the mistakes we made in tonight’s scrimmage. Tullahoma executed well, and they are much improved over last year. They played a lot of young players the past two years and now those players are experienced.”
A turning point in the scrimmage happened early, a fumble on Warren County’s opening drive. Rozier lost the ball at the 6-yard line as the Pioneers appeared to be driving to score and take a 6-0 lead.
Tullahoma quickly capitalized on the fumble by throwing a sideline pass that went for 53 yards. A couple plays later, Amauri Brooks, a transfer from Blackman, ran in from 30 yards to put Tullahoma up 7-0 with the extra point.
One the next possession, Warren County went three plays and out, with one of the game’s several dropped passes ending the drive.
Tullahoma fumbled on the next possession and Warren County took over around midfield. Grayson made some elusive plays, but eventually was sacked on a play that ended the drive.
Tullahoma then grinded out a drive and scored, ending the first half scoring and going up 14-6. The first units sat out the second half, and a lot of players from both teams got some valuable playing time.
Coach Moore said Friday’s scrimmage was a tough turnaround after scrimmaging Lincoln County on Monday, a game that was postponed from last Friday due to inclement weather. Some players were banged up from Monday’s scrimmage and did not participate. They are expected to be ready for the opening game with DeKalb County in two weeks.
Warren County plays its last scrimmage this coming Friday against Dickson County at the Columbia Jamboree.
