The Security Federal Tennis Tournament was a smashing success in June.
David Dunlap is looking to duplicate that effort in August with the second tournament at McMinnville Civic Center this summer.
Registration is currently underway for the Dr Pepper Tennis Tournament, set for Aug. 6-8. The registration fee is $15.
“People really turned out like crazy for the Security Federal Tournament,” said Dunlap. “I was shooting for 50 and we had 89 to register. A couple of them didn’t compete, but we will had over 80 who were in the tournament.”
Dunlap says he’s setting his sights on getting 50 participants once again. He announced tournament sign-ups last week and 17 people have already registered.
“With COVID, I really don’t know what to expect, but I don’t expect to have 80 again,” said Dunlap. “If we can get 50, that’s still enough for a good tournament.”
It will be a pro-set format, which is one set of eight games. A player must win by two games.
Dunlap says tennis has been rated as a relatively safe sport because players are rarely close during a match.
“If you’re both hitting from the baseline, you’re about 80 feet apart,” said Dunlap.
He says proper precautions remain a focus and he will have an area for players to wait until their set starts and he will also have items available for sanitizing. Facemasks will not be required.
There are categories for all skill levels of men and women in singles and doubles competition. There are also divisions for boys and girls up to age 12.
Mail-in registration can be sent to: David Dunlap, 208 Donnell Street, McMinnville, TN 37110. For more information, call Dunlap at (931) 273-3635.
