If the Boyd basketball teams made New Year's resolutions to start fast in 2024, they both will need a redo. The Lady Broncos and Broncos each lost on the road Tuesday night in Watertown.
The Lady Broncos fell 41-27, getting swept for the second time in as many seasons by the Lady Tigers. The Boyd boys team lost 59-34, losing steam in the fourth quarter after entering the final eight minutes trailing by just five.
The Lady Broncos, now 11-11, continued to struggle against the Watertown defense in Tuesday's matchup. The Purple Tigers have held Boyd to less than 30 points in all four meetings the last two seasons, including putting the clamps on Boyd again in the last matchup this season. Freshman Katie Bechtel led Boyd's offense with nine points, doing most of her damage late when Boyd couldn't make a late comeback.
"They do a good job of keeping the game at their pace and making sure we don't get out and run for easy baskets," said Boyd coach Tim Page. "Transition points were the difference - they scored 17 and we didn't have any. Our defense was sound when we set up, but they turned defense into offense more frequently than us."
In the boys game, Boyd (1-17) was trailing 35-30 entering the fourth, but the Purple Tigers dominated the last eight minutes to turn a close game into a rout. Seniors Jordan Perry and Dylan Vandeveer led the Broncos with nine points each.
Boyd will get back into TSIAA action Saturday when Dickson Christian comes to town. Action is set to start at JK Stanley Gymnasium at 2 p.m. The Lady Broncos will face LaVergne Friday at 6 p.m. at home.
