Strong start

Callie Roberts and the Lady Pioneers started the season with a 4-0 win over Harris Tuesday. WCMS will make up its Monday's postponed game at Harris on Wednesday, May 18.

After Monday’s washout of the season openers, the WCMS softball and baseball teams didn’t have much faith Tuesday would be any different. Early in the morning, both teams even made calls to postpone their matchups with Shelbyville.

When the sun poked through though, softball coach Joe Damon and baseball skipper Chad Young sprang into action. Their efforts allowed both teams to make their season debuts – and it was a good thing they did.

The Lady Pioneers and Pioneers both started the season with home wins over Shelbyville. The finals were the same as well, with both WCMS teams winning 4-0.

Brooklyn Cope dominated in the circle for the Lady Pioneers, going the distance to complete the shutout. Cope struck out six over five innings while allowing just one hit.

Two throwing errors helped Warren County go up 2-0 in the bottom of the first. Cope helped her cause in the second, grounding out to bring around Lily Rains, who had singled.

Isabella Pennington added the final insurance in the fourth, driving in Halle Lowe with a single. Pennington led the offense with two hits, while Rains, Lowe and Jazz Ward had one hit each.

Baler Melton and Brody Womack combined for the Pioneer shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out 13 combined. Melton, who earned the win, had nine strikeouts in four innings before Womack shut the door in the final three frames.

Alex van Vuuren broke the game open with a two-run single in the fifth, part of a two-hit night for the eighth-grader. Keynai Bryan and Womack also had two hits, while Melton, Easton Denning and Tyler Adams added one hit. Womack and Melton also finished with RBIs.
