Stars emerging for WCMS golf

If you’re looking for the next stars on the links in Warren County, Bryan Matheny can point you in the right direction. The longtime WCMS golf coach is cultivating some great talent this season.

The Lady Pioneers have started 6-0 this season, while the Pioneers are 4-2 after splitting a home match with Overton and Algood at McMinnville Country Club Thursday. The Warren County boys beat Overton, but were unable to take down Algood in the team scores.

Getting off a great start on both sides has brought a smile to Matheny’s face. He’s nearing a decade with the program and is delighted to have two solid groups out on the course this year, especially with two headliners leading the way.

Abigail Netherton and Noel Davis have emerged as not only the top young golfers in Warren County, but they may both be the top CTC golfers as well.

Netherton, who is quickly earning the reputation as a multi-sport star with the Lady Pioneers, has a knack for long drives and deft touch on the course, which helped the WCMS girls smash Overton and Algood Thursday. She has a strong resiliency as well, with Matheny noting that his young phenom rarely has two bad holes in a row.

While she’s been the driving force behind a perfect start for the Lady Pioneers, Davis is doing the same kind of heavy lifting for the Pioneers. He wasn’t able to do it all on his home course Thursday, though he did leave the day with the lowest score on the boys side. Davis shot 40 in nine holes at MCC, eclipsing the mark shot by the returning conference champion playing in the same field.

Warren County will get a chance to show out at its home course twice this week. The WCMS golf teams are set to take on both White County (Tuesday) and Prescott (Thursday) in upcoming matches. Action will begin at 3:30 p.m.
