Second Sunny Guthrie Fun Run set for Sept. 16

The second annual Sunny Guthrie Fun Run will take off from Milner Recreation Center on Saturday, Sept. 16. The event, which raises money for a scholarship, will begin at 7 a.m.

The Sunny Guthrie Fun Run was a major hit last year, with many local runners gathering for a great cause. Leah Simpson and Wesley Cook serve as co-chairs for the race, which is in honor of Alex and Bethany Guthrie’s infant daughter, Sunny, who passed away in 2021. The scholarship is also named in her honor.

Natalie Stepien (2021) and Brienne Kelsey (2022) have received the scholarship so far, which goes to a female who exhibits bravery, strength and love among their graduating class. Stepien is currently pursuing a business degree in management (and human resources) at MTSU and Kelsey is in her first year at TTU with hopes of becoming a pediatric nurse.

Runners can visit reg2run.com to register for the event. The registration fee is $35.

"The community can support by signing up to run and/or walk and joining us on the morning of Sept. 16. Running is not required - little ones and walkers are welcome as well," said Simpson. "Volunteers are also needed to man stations throughout the course. If groups or individuals are looking for volunteer hours, this is a great way to support the community and gain hours."

Runners who register early will receive a comfort T-shirt at the race. The run is chip-times, with winners being awards following the 5K.

Race organizers are also welcoming sponsors for the race this year. More information on becoming a sponsor can be found on the Sunny Guthrie Fun Run Facebook page.
