Season ends for Lady Pioneers
WCHS falls one win short of state tournament trip

The Lady Pioneers finished out their successful season by losing to Stewart’s Creek 9-1 in the sectionals game. WCHS may have lost out on appearing in the state tournament, but they have worked hard to make it as far as they have.

The game opened strong for the Lady Pioneers with a double from Shelby Roberts. Unfortunately, a couple of fly outs stranded Roberts in the first. The Lady Pioneer defense was tough, keeping Stewart’s Creek scoreless for the first 2 innings.

At the bottom of the third, however, the dam broke as Stewart's Creek plated 7. They had hit after hit and gained a huge advantage over the Lady Pioneers. The WCHS defense improved after that with some very impressive plays in the field and 2 strikeouts from Madison Hollis.

Alyssa Mosely was hot at shortstop catching a few hits including one in foul territory that she raced to get. At the bottom of the fifth, Aleya Esparza was strong at second making the out at first and catching a pop out.

Jessie Young at third base also got into the action, catching a couple line outs, but a home run from Stewart's Creek in the sixth gave them 2 more runs. Warren County also scored a run in the sixth after a couple singles and Roberts being walked in.

She led the team with hits going 2 for 4 at the plate and scoring the only Lady Pioneer run. “I’m proud of these girls. They gave us a chance to get to the state tournament,” said head Coach Gooby Martin. “The deeper you get in May, you have to play better.”

The 9-1 loss brought an end to the season, but it doesn't diminish the year they had to get this far.
