Freshman Clay Thompson has been making big plays for the Pioneers. Thompson, who plays receiver and safety, caught what proved to be the game-winning touchdown in Warren County's 28-21 victory over Fayetteville City Oct. 6.
Tangling on the gridiron with most of the Murfreesboro programs has only been a recent occurrence, but the Pioneers’ opponent Friday night has been coming to Nunley Stadium since the 1970s.Warren County (3-5) will play host to the Riverdale Warriors, pairing the two programs up for the 29th time since their first matchup in 1972. The Pioneers will be trying to snap a 12-game losing streak to the Warriors on senior night.None of the Pioneers’ 11 seniors were alive when Warren County last beat Riverdale 28-14 in 1990. The matchup, which was yearly from 1977-98, has been one sided since the Warriors won 59-14 in 1991 and grew into a powerhouse under Gary Rankin in the mid-1990s.The yearly games were stopped after 1998 when Riverdale had won eight consecutive matchups by a combined score of 363-41.
