Whether you’re looking to burn off one too many bite-sized candy bars, or just get in the spirit of the holiday, the Southern Standard’s Halloween Hustle 5K and 1-Mile Walk is the place to be.
Scheduled for Oct. 24, the event will feature a costume contest for runners and non-runners, a decoration contest for homes along the race route, and a cruise-in contest with a scary twist. Registration begins at 3 p.m. at the Blue Building on Colville Street in downtown McMinnville. Car show participants and general public costume contest starts at 4:30 p.m. The race starts at 5:30 p.m., with runners/ walkers judged on costume at 5 p.m. and winners announced after the race.
The 5K is a certified course and the race will be chip timed. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to dress in their favorite costume. All runners and walkers will receive a participation medal. The fee is $25 for runners and $10 for walkers. Trophies will be awarded for top male and female finishers, with additional awards in five-year age brackets.
Homeowners along the race route are encouraged to out-BOO their neighbors. Those decked out with demons, tombstones, jack-o-lanterns, and other ghostly characters will be judged for the Standard’s Halloween Decorated Homes contest with cash prizes.
Race route: Runners will take South High Street, turn right onto George Higgins Drive, right on-to Highland Drive, left onto West Colville Street, left onto Morrison Street, right onto Westwood 5th Avenue, right onto Westwood Drive, and left onto Morrison Street. From there, runners will make their way back to the Blue Building by way of West Colville.
The cruise-in entry fee is $10. Cruisers are encouraged to dress in Halloween-related cos-tumes, decorate their vehicles and hand out candy. There will be a prize for the best decorated vehi-cle. Dash plaques will be given to each cruise-in participant.
Runners and walkers may preregister at the Standard office or online at www.reg2run.com. All participants must sign a waiver and wear reflective clothing, not including shoes, for safety.
