When Warren County sophomore golfer Nicholas Powell looks back at his time on WillowBrook golf course during the state tournament, hopefully he’ll remember it as a stepping stone to a great career as a Pioneer.Powell completed play in the state tournament Wednesday as he shot 81 in his final round to finish 70th among the 73 golfers in the competition.Powell, who was one of the youngest golfers who made the field of 73 in Manchester, started the day tied for last after having a rough day in the opening round as he started the tournament by shooting 92.His second round was much better as the sophomore didn’t let the atmosphere of the state stage affect his game.Powell was up-and-down in the final round as he began the day out of contention for the state title. With all the pressure off, Powell let his talent take over as he turned in his best round of the season at WillowBrook golf course, a place where the Pioneers played a match and tournament during the regular season.Even the stellar round Wednesday couldn’t pull Powell within some of the top golfers at the event, who were all seniors.Stuart Thomas, a senior at Farragut, won a three-player playoff to capture the state title. Thomas, who shot a 2-under 70 each day, defeated Siegel senior Arjuna Anday and Dickson County senior Ben Wolcott in the playoff. Anday led after day one as he shot a 4-under, 68 Tuesday.
