There was a dogpile and wild celebration Tuesday night when the WCHS baseball team beat White County in extra innings to finish in a first-place tie in the district.
In the two games since, the Pioneers have lost their bark.
Warren County suffered a 7-4 loss Friday night against Shelbyville, following an 8-2 setback Wednesday against McCallie.
Against Shelbyville, the Pioneers (14-18) tried to claw their way back from a 7-1 deficit in the bottom of the seventh, plating three runs, but the rally ran out of steam and Shelbyville clung to victory.
Trace Adcock pitched five solid innings for the Pioneers, leaving the game in the sixth with Warren County trailing 2-1. Adcock struck out 5, walked 2, and allowed 6 hits. Shelbyville scored 5 runs in the top of the seventh against the Pioneer bullpen.
No one had multiple hits for Warren County. Dylan Ward, Ryland Holder, Will Cantrell, Hunter Adams, Heath Kuykendall and Kason Holder all had 1 hit each. Ward had 2 RBIs.
Warren County’s main nemesis was Shelbyville leadoff hitter Slayde Simmons, who crushed 3 doubles and scored twice. Shelbyville won its district in the regular season, finishing in a tie with Columbia but winning the tiebreaker due to sweeping the head-to-head series.
Shelbyville started the first three innings with lead-off doubles, but Adcock managed to work his way out of the second and third innings without allowing a run to score.
The Pioneers finish the regular season with road games against Lincoln County on Monday and Central Magnet on Tuesday. The district tournament is set to begin Thursday with Warren County entering as the No. 2 seed due to a tiebreaker loss to Cookeville.
