Pioneers prep for spring finale

Lacedrick Cox has made a quick transition on the gridiron. The all-district basketball player could play a key role in the Pioneer secondary this fall.

When Matt Turner took the head coaching job, he envisioned Friday nights where Nunley Stadium would be full of Pioneer fans.

He’ll get his first chance to pack the stands this week. The Warren County High School football team will conclude spring practice with a Blue and White game Friday night at 7 p.m.

“We want to run four quarters,” said Turner, who was hired in March. “We want to run the first-team offense against the first-team defense, and also have the second-teams compete too. We’ll also run some first-team units against second-team units.

“We are trying to set it up where every young man gets a chance to perform and put their work on film. With that, we can go into summer with a good baseline on each player so they can continue to build toward our goals.”

Turner started to divide his roster at practice Tuesday, setting up a week of competition between teams. A full-scale scrimmage wouldn’t have been possible last fall, when the Pioneers struggled to have 40 players show up for practice.

Participation hasn’t been an issue this spring, with Turner rotating five different defensive units at times Monday. He’s hopeful the numbers will grow more in the fall, when spring athletes and upcoming freshmen join the fold.

While Turner hopes to execute the scrimmage like a game, he knows there will be some times where action slows to iron out issues.

“We plan to run as much like a game as possible, minus the kicking game,” said Turner. “I know it may look rough from the outside due to mixing it up. However, I’m wanting to give kids a chance to play under the lights and see who rises to the challenge.

“We have so many new players and they’re going to be thrown in the fire. It’s going to be interesting.”

Rosters are still being finalized. If available, they will be run in Friday’s Standard.

Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children.
