The last time the middle school Pioneers played Franklin South, Warren County lost by three points. Monday night the Pioneers shut down South 47-19 with solid defense and a balanced scoring attack.

Carter Simpson led Warren County in scoring with 14 points. DeShawn Adams contributed 12 points that were in the paint against taller defenders. Luke Simpson was the Pioneers’ third leading scorer with 10 points. An example of Warren County’s strong defense was the fact only two South players scored points in the game.

The Pioneers capitalized on their strong defense by creating some fast breaks off rebounds and steals. Carter Simpson popped two 3-pointers in the first quarter that helped Warren County gain momentum with a large lead. Ayden Odineal also made a 3-point shot in the first quarter that energized the Pioneers.

Several players fed DeShawn Adams in the low post near the basket as they were driving to the basket. Adams used excellent body movement against taller defenders and put the ball in the basket with a soft, accurate touch. The Pioneers inside-outside offense was very effective against Franklin South, which struggled on both ends of the court.

WCMS coach Kevin Burnett was able to empty the bench and give every Pioneer playing time. Burnett likes how his team has improved during the season, and he believes that if his team keeps playing at its present level, the Pioneers will do well in the CTC Tournament next month which will be at Franklin South.

Coach Burnett was asked why he thought his team blew out Franklin South after losing to them earlier in the season. Coach Burnett replied, “I think we have been plugging holes. We fixed some leaks. We have made a lot of strides.  The defensive effort tonight was really good. The boards were good. If you rebound the ball and do not turn the ball over a lot, good things are going to happen.”

Eighth-grader DeShawn Adams has not played basketball since fifth grade. He was asked why he is playing this year. Adams said, “A lot of people asked me to play, and I liked it, so I came back.” Adams was asked why he thought they beat South, and he replied, “We lost the last game, and we had to bring it back this game. We played good tonight.”

The Pioneers are on the road Thursday night against Tullahoma East.
