The WCHS soccer team barely broke a sweat while picking up a win on opening night. The Pioneers pummeled Coffee County 8-1, starting the season on the right foot as the team preps to make waves in District 6AAA this season.
FD de Santiago continued to show why he may be the comeback player of the year in the district this season, scoring three goals to lead Warren County. Santiago didn't play as a junior last year, but returned to the team this season and has scored three goals in each of their last two matchups, the first hat trick coming in a scrimmage against St. Andrews Sewanee last week.
John Jackson added five assists and one goal as the Pioneers found little resistance through the Coffee County defense. The two-time, all-district honoree looked poised orchestrating the offense from the midfield, especially with new threats Santiago and Renato Rodriguez (two goals) spacing the field.
Jake Toney and Edgar Lopez added one goal each.
"We played well. Our defense was great. Their one goal came late after quite a few had moved around," said coach Matt Jackson, who saw his team build a 5-0 lead by halftime.
Warren County will have a long layoff before returning to action. The Pioneers play again Saturday, March 21 at home against Tullahoma.
