Warren County continues to hover around the playoff conversation in Region 3-6A. With a 42-20 blowout of Coffee County, coupled with Riverdale's 17-point loss at Oakland last week, the Pioneers moved into a three-way tie for third place in the region at 3-2 overall.
Friday will pit Warren County against one of the teams it is fighting for a playoff spot. The Pioneers will travel to Murfreesboro to take on the 5-3 Riverdale Warriors.
Warren County (4-4) can take another step toward postseason play by beating the Warriors, but it won't be easy. Riverdale has won every matchup since the two teams became region foes four years ago, including a 53-0 beatdown of the Pioneers last year.
Even if the Pioneers can pull off an upset Friday, it may not be enough. Warren County would secure a playoff spot by winning out, but the Pioneers close out the season on the road against the undefeated Oakland Patriots, the reigning state champions.
If the Pioneers were to beat Riverdale, but fall to Oakland, the team would finish 4-3 in region play.
Cookeville, which holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Warren County courtesy of its 25-19 win over the Pioneers Oct. 4, could move its region record to 4-3 by beating either Rockvale (currently 0-8) this week or Blackman next week.
Even if the Pioneers beat Riverdale Friday, the Warriors could also finish 4-3 in region play by beating Coffee County next week (Riverdale beat the Red Raiders 48-0 last season).
According to reporting by the Tennessean last year, tiebreakers are as follows:
1. Head-to-head (if one team beat all other teams in the tiebreaker, it is ranked above all other teams)
2. Team with the greatest number of victories
3. Team that plays the greatest number of teams that won 50 percent or more of their games
4. Team has the greatest number of wins against teams that won 50 percent or more of their games
5. Teams whose opponents have the most wins
6. Teams whose opponents have the fewest losses
7. Coin toss
(In case of three-team tiebreaker, if one tiebreaker separates one team, the other two teams left revert back to head-to-head).
Friday's kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
