Elsa Eckenrod’s European adventure has begun.

The local product turned basketball star at Maryville College is playing for the Beyond Sports basketball team in Spain for two weeks. Eckenrod got her first action in Wednesday, helping her team win against a club team from Spain.

“They don’t have college programs like we do. Their players, if they’ve done well in high school, will play for club teams,” said Eckenrod. “I was happy we were able to get our first win. We fought back and got it done.”

Eckenrod scored seven points in the victory, hopefully one of many the former Lady Pioneer will experience overseas. The team will return to the United States next weekend.

A chance encounter during her sophomore season led to Eckenrod being invited to take part with the Beyond Sports travel team. Eckenrod played a game against Thomas More University, coached by Jeff Hans. Hans is currently serving as Eckenrod’s coach in Spain.

“The coach is amazing,” said Eckenrod. “It’s been a blast.”

Eckenrod will return to Maryville College this fall, where she’ll be a rising junior with starting experience. She averaged over seven points per game in 26 starts last season.
