Moore Thoughts - WCHS teams tackle tourney
taylor moore

Tournament season is among us for WCHS baseball and softball fans and with both the Pioneers and Lady Pioneers, I am having a hard time predicting the turnout this season. I obviously want WC to take both district championships, but there are some stiff competitors in both districts.

I want to start with my analysis of the Lady Pioneers going into the tournament as I feel that’s more clear-cut. Right now, Warren County is easily second in the district standing 6-3 with only Coffee County ahead of us at 8-0. I actually think Warren and Coffee are going to be seeing a lot of each other in this tournament.

WC has never lost to the Lady Raiders by a huge margin and just beat them Friday in the winner’s bracket. The Lady Pioneers always manage to score runs on the Lady Raiders, and if WC gets some good pitching, they know how to hit the ball.

Madison Hollis and Marli McBride have both hit some bombs with Kora Forbes, Alyssa Mosley and Shelby Roberts also being heavy hitters. Combined with quick base runners in Ky Damon, Aleya Esparza and Jazzlyn Ward, WC has the ability to win over Coffee County.

I wouldn’t count Franklin County out as the Lady Rebels have come close to beating Warren County before, and they gave the Lady Pioneers a run for their money in the first round of the tournament. I won’t predict who will win as I don’t want to jinx it, but I feel confident the Lady Pioneers can have a title this year.

The baseball team is a little bit more difficult to predict for me as the top 3 teams are a lot closer in record. Franklin County and Coffee County are both 8-4 in the district with Warren County right behind at 6-6, making this year’s district tournament one to watch.

They are dead even with Coffee County losing to them as many times as they’ve won, which tells me mound play is going to be the biggest determining factor for the Pioneers. WC benefits from having many pitchers on the team.

The Pioneers have also been impressive on the baselines, but that can get them into trouble sometimes if they get too confident in their speed. Easton Denning and Layne Roberts can hit a ball to help the Pioneers with Hayden Collins and Alex van Vuuren being strong runners.

Warren County has the defensive play down pretty well, so if our pitchers keep their nerves under control and make some smart plays, I wouldn’t be shocked if Warren County went home with two trophies. I do think Franklin County will be the hardest adversary in the tournament as they’ve given WC more losses.

At the end of the day, I truly believe both teams can win their respective tournaments, but if they don’t they have given us some great games this season and should be proud.
