McMinnville Swim Team dominates meet

Nobody had to wait for the results to come out. Midway through Tuesday’s swim meet, everybody knew the McMinnville Swim Team was going to win.

The local swimming squad dominated Tullahoma, winning the overall meet 395-116. McMinnville won 53 of the 68 total events, including Ethan Eller, Natalie Payne, JP Toney, Maddie Smith, Mitchell Caten and Jalyn Mart all finishing with three individual victories apiece.

“It was our last dual meet and it was good prep for the championships coming up at Sewanee,” said coach Paige Northcutt. “We put forth a good effort. We had several swimmers come in with personal-best times.”

Eller’s competition in the 8-and-under races came from teammate Hunter Johnson, who finished second in the 25-meter free, 25 breast stroke and 25 backstroke. Eller edged Johnson in the 25 free by less than a second, their closest race to the wall.

Payne won every event she entered in the girls 9-10 division and was also part of two relay winners. Much like Eller, her toughest competition wasn’t from Tullahoma – it was people wearing the same colors. Payne won the 25 breast with a time of 28.17 seconds, less than a second in front of teammates Emme Reed (28.70) and Kaylee Evans (29.07). Payne also won the 50 free and 100 individual medley.

In the boys 11-12 action, Toney won the 50 free, 50 back and 50 fly. In two events, the free and back, teammate Isaac Stefanick was second to touch the wall. Stefanick broke through in the 50 breast, winning over Owen Fry.

Smith completed dominated the girls 13-14 division, turning in winning times in the free, breast and back. She was also the lone competitor in the individual medley, along with winning in the 100 relay in both the girls and mixed relay events.

Caten and Mart were dominant the 13-14 and 15-and-over divisions, respectively. Caten was the fastest in the 50 free, 50 fly and 100 individual medley. Mart showed why he’s one of the fastest in the state in the 50 fly, winning the competition by nearly 10 seconds at 30.65 seconds. He was also the top finisher in the 100 individual medley and 50 breast.

In the 50 breast – a race Mart had yet to post a qualifying time in before Tuesday’s event – he was able to edge teammate Robert Oaks by just over a second. After finishing, Mart let his teammate know who was the fastest with some light-hearted banter between the teammates.

Mart is one of the several swimmers Northcutt expects to compete for top honors in the state championships.

“Jalyn and many others have a good chance to do well at Sewanee,” said Northcutt. “We’re the only team who will compete in the event that doesn’t have an indoor pool, but we’ll get out there and compete with heart and effort.

“We’ve had more kids swimming this year than ever before. We have 107 and 87 will compete at the championship.”

The final event at Sewanee will be Saturday, July 13.
