Brooke Kesey’s legacy at Boyd continues to grow. The splendid sophomore hit a major milestone Monday, scoring her 1,000th point while helping the Lady Broncos pull out a tough win on the road against rival Franklin Road Christian.
Kesey got to the mark on a free throw in the third quarter and was immediately swarmed by teammates when coach Tim Page called a timeout to honor the moment. She went on to score 13 points as Boyd picked up its 11th win and improved to 7-1 in conference games this season.
“It was just a fantastic moment for Brooke and it was great to see her teammates get in on the celebration,” said Page. “From the moment she arrived at Boyd, it was obvious she had a ton of untapped potential. She has worked really hard and put in so much time on the court - in practice and outside of it in her own free time – to improve.
“It’s really a testament of her hard work and how much her teammates believe in her. They work to get her the ball and she’s become a dominant scorer in the paint.”
Kesey bust on the scene last year as a freshman with a standout season as Boyd won 26 games and collected the TSIAA South Division championship. She was named all-conference and a NACA All-American while averaging 17.1 points per game and shooting 53 percent from the field. She set an early career high in points when she scored 24 against Rhea County in just her 10th career high school game.
Kesey went on to have four 30-plus point games as a freshman, topped by a 33-point performance in a home win over Zion Christian.
She’s upped her average to 17.2 points per game as a sophomore and matched her career-high total with 33 points in a win earlier this season against Lancaster Christian. She also had a 30-point, 13-rebound game against Monterey and put up 27 points and 19 boards in a win over Franklin Christian.
“I think Brooke is still just scratching the surface on what she can be on the basketball court. She’s a good shooter, can finish with either hand in the paint and always runs hard to get position in transition. She’s going to have her name on the wall with a lot of great athletes in Boyd’s history, but I’m not sure how many of them – if any – got to 1,000 points as a sophomore. She’s a special kid,” said Page.
Kesey and the Lady Broncos will be looking to pile up wins this weekend when they take on Lancaster Christian on the road Friday and face Winchester Christian at home Saturday for homecoming, weather permitting.
Friday's TSIAA tilt is set to start at 6 p.m. while Saturday's tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at JK Stanley Gymnasium.
