Snow days have played havoc on the 5-6 grade elementary basketball schedule.

Teams have had trouble building momentum as a pair of game nights  – Jan. 24 and 29 – were forced to be rescheduled due to school closings. The postponements have left schools scrambling to pack in games before the tournament begins Feb. 19.

The league, split into two districts, has seen some teams emerge as early favorites to take home regular-season championships.

In District 1 girls action, Irving College has won its first four games. The Lady Tigers recently topped Bobby Ray 16-4 and hung tough to take down West Elementary 20-17 last Tuesday. Already owners of two wins over West Elementary, which sits in second with a 3-2 record, Irving College will have to drop three of its last four games to fall out of first place.

Similarly, the Centertown Lady Warriors have taken command of District 2. Centertown, which won the preseason tournament, is 4-0 with all its wins coming by double figures. Warren County Middle School is currently second at 3-2.

On the boys side, WCMS is dominating District 2. The Pioneers are 5-0 and have won their games by a combined 173 points. The Morrison Eagles are trying to keep pace with a 4-1 mark, but already lost a head-to-head matchup with the Pioneers 40-21.

The District 1 boys lead is currently held by West Elementary at 4-1. Hickory Creek, thanks to two postponements, is just 2-1 after a month of play. Coaches are also keeping a close eye on Boyd, which lost its first three games but was a winner Tuesday over Bobby Ray 25-18 with Gage Harris on the court.

Harris started the season playing for WCMS.

Elementary action will return Monday with a trio of makeup games at Bobby Ray, Irving College and Centertown. Action is set to start at 6 p.m.
