It hasn’t taken long for Covenant Academy to become one of the top soccer programs in the Midstate.
The Lions roared to a TNCAA championship Thursday, defeating Madison Academy 2-0 to earn the title.
Caleb Hines scored both of the team’s goals, helping him earn tournament MVP for his efforts. Hines scored five goals over the course of three games to take the top honor.
If Covenant coach Chris Madewell had his choice, the whole squad would have MVP awards.
“It was a total team effort to win,” said Madewell. “It was probably the best game we have played all year. We played them once before and they beat us by five goals. I can’t say enough of how this team has improved through the season. This game showed the hard work they put in paid off.”
The Lions were dominant defensively early, forcing Madison Academy to shoot from outside. James Hines, who didn’t allow a goal in three tournament games, made stops when needed.
The Lions used a quick-strike attack to get both their goals before halftime.
Caleb Hines was able place two perfect shots past the Madison Academy keeper, giving his team a 2-0 cushion at the break.
With all-tournament selection Vansh Patel helping control the middle for Covenant in the second half, Madison Academy was unable to rally.
“We came out playing solid in the first half. We kept them away from the goal. In the second half, we stayed solid on defense,” said Madewell.
Covenant advanced to the finals with a 1-0 win over Lancaster. Caleb Hines had the lone goal, burying a penalty kick. James Hines had a huge stop on the other end, stoning a penalty kick to keep his team in front.
In the quarterfinals, the Lions blanked Dayspring Academy 5-0. Patel, Caleb Hines, Beckham Scott and Jackson Jones all scored.
