It took the Lady Pioneers a few points to warm up against Cascade, but once Warren County got rolling, the Champions had no chance. The Lady Pioneers toppled Cascade in straight sets Monday at home, earning their third win of the season.
Warren County (3-8) fell behind 7-1 in the first set, prompting an early timeout from coach Erin Blalock. After a quick pep talk from their leader, the Lady Pioneers turned into a different team. Serves started finding the floor on Cascade's side, every hit by the Champions at the net was contested and the strong lineup of Lady Pioneer hitters started slamming the ball.
"It was great to get a win," said Blalock. "I hesitate to call it a slump because the girls have been playing really good ball, even with the losses, but it was great to get back in the win column."
Aubrey Oleksik sealed the comeback in the first set, sailing a perfectly placed push shot over two blockers and by two scrambling defenders in the left corner.
Warren County wouldn't look back from there. Playing with confidence after the first-set comeback, the Lady Pioneers were able to set up big hits off passes from Abigail Brown, fly to the ball with the back-row defense led by Ali Young, Oleksik and Lola Wells and dominate the net behind big middle hitters Natalie Payne and Samantha Saldana.
The Lady Pioneers put the game away in the third set, earning their first victory since beating La Vergne at home Aug. 26.
Warren County hit the road Tuesday night in hopes to continuing their winning ways against La Vergne. See Friday's paper for more information on the matchup.
