The Covenant Academy Lady Lions overcame the West Academy Lady Thunderbirds in a low-scoring Senior Night battle on Thursday night, 30-28.

Madisen Madewell, a senior, scored 16 points to lead Covenant.

Playing in their home gym, the Lady Lions fell behind in the first quarter when the Lady Thunderbirds applied heavy pressure.

Leading by seven, the Lady Thunderbirds continued to score into the second quarter. The Lady Lions, however, played great defense, slowing West down. Also, the Lady Thunderbirds were starting to get in foul trouble, allowing Covenant to slowly begin closing the gap.

West Academy maintained its lead at halftime, 19-13, and started strong in the third quarter with Kylie Spencer making a hard steal from Covenant.

Madewell responded for Covenant by making a 3-pointer and Savannah Duggin scored a jump shot not too long after. Covenant senior Sarah Sharpe was consistently ready to grab rebounds throughout the game.

West maintained the lead entering the fourth quarter. Fighting for the ball, there were countless jump balls at the beginning of the final quarter.

Addison Smith, Kaylen Jacobs and Ryann Allen all retrieved important rebounds to help Covenant gain control.

With great defense, the Lady Lions prevented West from scoring, and they started slowly creeping toward the lead. In the clutch, Covenant stole the ball when it mattered.

Duggin stole the ball with 1:00 left and passed the ball to Madewell where she tied the game. West Academy’s Spencer had an intentional foul called against her with :02 on the clock, sealing the Thunderbirds’ fate.

Covenant won with a great showing in the last quarter, 30-28. Behind the whole night and not scoring much until the second half, the Lady Lions achieved a well-earned victory.

Covenant lost its game to Clarksville Christian on Friday, but the Lions are in a three-way tie for first in the South Division.
