In a physical and unpredictable matchup, Hickory Creek ran out of gas, but the Lady Hawks had just enough in the tank to fend off Bobby Ray on Friday.
Playing in front of their student body for a day game, the Lady Hawks earned a 17-14 win.
The victory evens Hickory Creek’s record at 4-4 heading into this week’s District 1 Tournament at Boyd Christian School. Games start Tuesday at 6 p.m. with the championship games scheduled to be played Saturday night.
It was a near standstill at halftime with Bobby Ray clinging to a 10-8 lead. But that’s when the Lady Stars fell asleep and didn’t score a third-quarter point.
That allowed Hickory Creek to storm back behind the offense of Abby Graves and Makenzi Haile to take a 16-10 lead into the fourth.
But that’s when the Hickory Creek offense went into hibernation as the Lady Hawks couldn’t hit a shot from the field. Their only point came from a Maci McBride free throw.
Meanwhile, Bobby Ray (2-6) decided to work the ball inside to post Laura Sifuentes, who scored four points down low. That made it a 17-14 game and set up a frantic final two minutes, but neither team could score during that span and Hickory Creek escaped with the win.
