The Lady Tigers came up just a little short in Irving College when the Eastside Lady Bulldogs paid a visit Tuesday night. It has been an ongoing battle between these two powerhouse teams this season.
Both teams match up well inside the paint and each team has the ability to step back and fire from behind the arch. Irving College was outscored in the first two periods and Eastside held on and defeated the Lady Tigers, 41-35.
Grayson Hillis and MaKenna Mason led their Lady Bulldogs to a win with 12 points each. Hannah Lee also scored 12 points for the Lady Tigers.
The game was won in the first half by Eastside. The Lady Bulldogs pushed the tempo early and spread the offense. Kapri Talley and Riley Crawford worked the ball inside and each scored.
Grayson Hillis scored from outside the paint and then earned a trip to the free-throw line and shot 1-of-2 in the first quarter.
The Lady Tiger offense kept pace with Eastside. Jillian Frankman controlled underneath the basket for the Lady Tigers and she dropped in her first five points.
Lee fired from behind the 3-point line and hit her mark, her first of three shots from long distance. At the end of the first, the Lady Tigers trailed 9-8.
The Lady Bulldogs picked up their intensity on the defensive end. Hillis exploded to the basket and led Eastside with six points in the second quarter. Talley and Shani Palombo worked the paint and combined for four points before the half.
Irving College fell off the pace slightly. The Lady Tigers struggled to get the ball up the floor against the tenacious Eastside defense. Lee got an open look and connected on her second 3-point shot and Frankman added a basket underneath.
The Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to 19-15 at the half.
Both teams came out of the halftime break refocused and more intense.
Talley went back to work on the inside for Eastside and she got help from Mason and Hillis on the outside. Crawford connected from the free-throw line before the end of the third.
Irving College stayed within reach without an answer for the Lady Bulldogs offense. Lee connected on her third 3-pointer. Kenley Cathcart slipped free from the Lady Bulldog defense and scored her first basket and Ella Bond got a shot from just outside the paint to fall.
It was an even quarter on both ends and Irving College trailed 29-25 after three.
In the final period, Mason dropped in six points from the floor and shot a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
The fact the Lady Bulldogs defense maintained their intensity helped to secure the win. Eastside held Lee scoreless in the fourth and other Lady Tigers needed to step up. Karissa Smartt did and she picked up her only four points in the final period. Frankman and Cathcart also tried to cut into the Eastside lead.
Eastside outlasted Irving College and defeated the Lady Tigers, 41-35.
