Regular season champs have been crowned in the Warren County 7-8 grade elementary basketball leagues. The Morrison Eagles and Eastside Lady Bulldogs, who have played perfect ball all season, clinched titles Tuesday night.

Morrison, behind star guard Kristopher Robledo, was able to hold off a strong challenge from Centertown and win 32-23, while the Lady Bulldogs smashed Boyd 50-6 to continue to unbeaten season. Both regular-season titans are now 9-0 after Tuesday’s wins, rendering Thursday’s games (which weren’t completed by press time) meaningless to the final standings at the top.

The Warriors had thoughts of upsetting Morrison Tuesday, especially with big man Ryan Romzek turning into a beast on the block the last two weeks, but Robledo had other plans. The speedy guard poured in a game-high 16 points, scoring from everywhere to keep the Eagles out front.

Rylon Morrison added six points, along with valuable defense and rebounding, while Eli Davis scored six points during his battles with Romzek in the paint. Romzek, who leapt into the top five in elementary scoring with three straight big games, had 15 points in the loss.

On the girls side, Sarah Kate Winfree – the top scorer in either league – led Eastside to an easy win over the Lady Broncos. Winfree, a seventh grader who still was a star on eighth grade night, had 19 points as she upped her season average to 18.2 points per game. Atlanta Fults and Alyssa Parsley matched Boyd’s output on their own, scoring six points each as Eastside took one step closer to a perfect regular season.

Thursday was the final night of the regular season and only one game had any bearing on the final standings. The Warriors and Eastside Bulldogs, both 6-3 going into the final night, had a battle for the No. 2 seed in next week’s elementary tournament. Eastside came into the game on a high after beating Boyd 56-16 Tuesday behind a monster 17-point night from Ty Arnold.

Check Sunday’s paper for the brackets for next week’s tournament. The 7-8 grade postseason tournament is sponsored by the 3-Point Club and will be held at Warren County High School.
