JV Pioneers win thriller
Elam's late-game catch snatches victory
Dante Elam, shown catching a TD in preseason, snagged the game-winning TD on Monday night in Manchester.

Dante Elam caught a TD pass with :18 left to catapult the Warren County High School junior varsity football team to victory Monday night in Manchester.
Elam’s catch allowed the Pioneers to claw back from a 13-point deficit and beat Coffee County, 14-13.
“To be down 13 points and to come back like that was just great for our football team,” said WCHS coach Tom Moore. “It was a tale of two halves. We couldn’t block or do anything right in the first half. We ran the ball up and down the field in the second half.”
The game-winning catch came on a 15-yard strike. Pioneer QB Clay Thompson threw the ball high and Elam, a freshman, came down with it in the endzone.
“He lobbed it up there and Dante was able to go up and make a play,” said Moore.
Things weren’t leaning Warren County’s way in the opening half. Coffee County held a 7-0 lead at intermission, then scored early in the third to forge ahead 13-0.
The Pioneers had the answer and it was the power running of Xander Lee and Tyzaun Ladet. The two were both effective running behind a Warren County line that suddenly developed some nastiness.
“Xander had well over 100 yards rushing and most of it was in the second half,” said Moore. “Tyzaun also ran the ball extremely well.”
It was Lee who punched the ball over the goal line on a short run to give Warren County its first TD. He then bulled his way in for the 2-point conversion to make it a 13-8 game.
That’s where the score remained until the closing seconds when Thompson and Elam connected for the TD, but the PAT was no good.
