Howard High School must not have included stopping Chance Hobbs on its Christmas list.
Behind a career-high 25 points from Hobbs, Warren County exploded for 89 points in beating Howard 89-76 on Tuesday in the White County Christmas Tournament in Sparta.
Hobbs, long known for his sharp perimeter shooting, buried seven 3-pointers on his way to scoring 25. That included making three shots from downtown in the first quarter.
The Pioneer offense was in rhythm from the opening tip. Warren County jumped out to a 28-10 lead – and this time the Pioneers weren’t about to let a big, early lead slip away. Isaac Golden added a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter as Warren County made seven as a team and 11 for the game.
Steady post Trevor Gaines added 18 points, while Golden scored 14, and Isaiah Grayson scored 11.
Marquis Williams was the top scorer for Howard. He tied Hobbs for game-high honors with 25.
Howard was able to battle back to make it a 48-36 game at the half. With a quick burst out of the locker room, Howard could have put the pressure on Warren County if the lead dropped to single digits.
But the Pioneers (8-10) were having none of it on this day as Hobbs hit two more 3’s and Gaines pounded away in the paint for eight points in the third quarter.
