Hickory Creek guard Maddux Baker makes a strong move to the basket for two of his 10 points Friday afternoon against Bobby Ray.

It didn’t sit well with the Hickory Creek boys basketball team when Bobby Ray started the second half with back-to-back baskets to take the lead.

The Hawks rattled off the next 12 points on their way to snatching a 37-28 win during a day game Friday at Hickory Creek.

Carter Simpson was the top scorer for Hickory Creek with 18. Zach Lindroth countered with 15 points for Bobby Ray, including three 3-pointers.

The win gives Hickory Creek (6-2) momentum heading into this week’s District 1 Tournament at Boyd Christian School. Bobby Ray finishes the regular season 1-7. Games start Tuesday at 6 p.m. with the championship games scheduled to be played Saturday night.

Hickory Creek was relentless in driving the ball to the basket early and jumped out to a 14-1 lead. Bobby Ray decided to go big to start the second quarter, playing posts Keyton Marsh and Dawson Crouch at the same time.

The strategy worked as the big guys clogged the lane and allowed Bobby Ray to claw back in the game. Lindroth nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key and Markel Locke went coast-to-coast after grabbing a rebound to make it an 18-15 game at the half.

Bobby Ray then silenced the capacity crowd of Hickory Creek students with two straight baskets to start the third quarter to take a 19-18 lead.

That’s when Simpson decided to get really aggressive and take the ball to the rim on every possession. He gave Hickory Creek the lead right back with a short basket, then continued to drive through the Bobby Ray defense, making close-range shots or drawing contact and getting to the foul line.

Simpson and Maddux Baker both came up with steals on the perimeter and drove in for layups to give Hickory Creek a 28-19 lead. By the time Hickory Creek’s Keyton Reno beat the buzzer for a layup, the Hawks were up 33-20 entering the fourth.

Hickory Creek decided to slow the pace with a 13-point lead and Bobby Ray couldn’t catch up.
