Dominate is only one word to describe the performance of the Her-icanes throughout the tournament.
In the championship game, the Her-icanes took an early 1-0 lead.
LaVergne Lightning was due up in the bottom of the first and it was tough Her-icane defense that made short work of the Lightning batting order. A strikeout led off the inning for the first out. The second out was made and a solid base hit looked like it would be a double for the Lightning but it turned into the final out on a perfect throw to second. The tag was applied and the inning ended three up, three down.
The second trip to the plate was the most productive for the Her-icanes. Taylor Swan started the inning with line-drive base hit. Bailey Glenn was off to the races on a ground ball and she beat out the throw to first base for a single. Jaden Smartt put the ball on the ground and Glenn was caught at second base on a fielder’s choice out. Elia Atterson kept the Her-icanes swirling the infield with a single. The Lightning defense was on its heels and the Her-icanes led 2-0. A pair of walks by Shelby Roberts and Woodside and a pair of singles by Rhealee Johnson and Jennings extended the lead 5-0. Finally, Jaelyn Breedlove hit a line-drive to right centerfield and Jennings crossed the plate for a 6-0 Her-icanes lead.
It was another short inning for the Lightning in the bottom of the second. After a lead-off first out, a runner reached first base on an error. The Her-icane defense quickly recovered and picked up back-to-back outs to end the inning for the Lightning.
In the top of the third, the Her-icanes offense looked like a category five. The bats continued to hold the heat from the previous inning and the runners continued their circular pattern around the bases. Glenn, Atterson, and Johnson continued to pound out hit after hit. While Jennings and Woodside drove in runs and the Her-icanes took a commanding lead, 9-0.
The Lightning had lost its fire and it was the third consecutive scoreless inning with only a single base hit in the way of offense. Only two runners in three innings and the Lightning trailed 9-0 after the third.
After a scoreless fourth inning by both teams, the 12U Bat Wars championship was claimed by the Her-icanes by a final score of 9-0.
