The Hickory Creek boys team picked up right where it left off. After winning the postseason Division 1 championship in February, a new batch of Hawks were hoisting hardware Friday night at Bobby Ray.

The Hawks topped Irving College 40-26 in the preseason Division 1 tournament.

Luke Simpson scored a game-high 18 points, while Maddoxx Baker added seven as the Hawks led wire-to-wire to claim another championship.

Jakoby Odineal chipped in six points, all coming in the first quarter as he helped the Hawks get off to a quick start. Hickory Creek led 12-6 after six minutes, an advantage that swelled to 23-15 by halftime once Simpson got going.

Simpson scored six points in the second quarter, helping hold off Irving College. The Tigers were able to stay in striking distance though, aided by a Jonas Bailey 3-pointer in the period.

After the break, Simpson and Baker cranked up the pressure.

The duo of Hawk guards flew around the court, rarely allowing Irving College to get up shots. The Tigers scored just one point in the third, while Simpson scored eight on his own.

Baker added five, while Ethan Holder chipped in a layup as Hickory Creek went up 38-16.

Hickory Creek only scored two points - Johnny Garcia made a layup - in the final quarter, but its lead was still safe.

Braydon Snider dominated the final six minutes, scoring six of his team-high 11 points for the Tigers and blocking several shots down low. Wesley Clendenon added four points in the fourth, giving him eight for the game.

Bailey finished with six points for the Tigers, while Canaan Pacis hit a free throw for his lone point.

Camron Holder finished with four points in the Hawk victory. Ledger Higgins scored one.
