Heather Dragon takes reins of WCMS volleyball
Madison Hollis serves a ball during practice Tuesday afternoon. Hollis is a key returning player for the WCMS volleyball team this season.

The Warren County Middle School volleyball team is in some unfamiliar territory this season as it will be without head coach Farrah Griffith, who started the program at WCMS over 15 years ago. With Griffith going to White County, the Lady Pioneers will be led this season by head coach Heather Dragon and assistant coach Kelly Clayborne.
Clayborne talked about what the departure of Griffith means to her and the team going forward.
“I had been helping Farrah coach for 10 years and her loss will be greatly felt to the team. We see it every day in practice. Just her experience as a coach and a player, also all of the skills she had taught our players will be greatly missed to the entire coaching staff and team.”
Clayborne added, “Farrah has been a big help to me and coach Dragon as we transition to the team.”
The team will be returning several key starters this season, including eighth-graders Samantha Jennings, who will be very active at the net, Sadie Simmons, who will be the team’s main setter, and Elia Atterson.
The seventh-grade class is led by Mea Starkey, Marli McBride, Bella Cantrell, and Juju Pyburn. They will be a vital part of the team’s success.
The team has been hard at work this offseason and, according to Clayborne, there have been many things the team has worked on to better itself for the upcoming season.
“We had a three-day camp with some coaches that came to us from Nashville. We worked on the fundamentals, such as passing, setting, serving and team work. We have seemed to get better in all aspects of the game as the summer has gone along.”
The team has high expectations this season and Clayborne wants the community to come out and support the Lady Pioneers.
“It should be an interesting season. We need all of the support we can get. Come out and watch us.”
