Over 400 votes were cast in the first round of the best WCHS sports moments of the 2019-20 school year bracket. Some surprising winners emerged in the Standard's bracket, which will declare a winner next Wednesday, April 15.
The biggest early upset came from Jack Keele in the spring sports bracket. Entering as a No. 4 seed, Keele's 13 strikeouts in the WCHS baseball season debut won in a vote over another dominant pitching performance - three Pioneers combining for a no-hitter.
With just 52.5 percent of the vote, Keele's margin of victory was the smallest in the first round. He moves on to meet another upset winner, the No. 3 seed softball team and its win over William Blount.
The Pioneers winning the District 6AAA tournament on a buzzer beater was a landslide victor in the first round, garnering 96.7 percent of the vote.
The Elite 8 also features the basketball team winning a region home game, Trevor Evans scoring his first points, the WCHS cheerleaders winning the state tournament and a pair of football victories.
Elite 8 voting is live on the Standard's sports Twitter page (@sstandardsports).
